The Artists + Designers + Photographers _ #6

Using their talents to render and communicate visually, this is how they see it.

Joseph Konopka

“My intent was to portray a sense, feeling or mood of Africa, without using typical african motifs, and I wanted to show a usual, common life action showed in imagery so as to depict real struggle, not the typical, starving, dirt poor or torture or the like, but familymen caught in the rain while waiting for food to bring home to their family.”

“On December 10th 1948, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, part of the text of these rights appear in my design. It's hard to believe that the simple rights as described in this declaration 56 years ago are so hard to fullfill by still "too" many countries on this planet.....”

“We are trying to focus on the 'connection issue', which is, in the case of Human Rights, peculiar. We are targeting an audience mostly de-sensitized by information overload, blinded by media obession for gore, tragedy, exaltation. Therefore: minimalistic design, with the tagline 2/3rd from the bottom. Pause, touch the page and wonder. The tagline is in Braille, a metaphorical for an eye injured (Un chien andalou, Adriana de Barros would remind us), isolation, blindness but at the same time a strong call to 'touch' the Other, the alien, and leave the page with the palm of our hand firm on the message. ”

Elisa Sassi

“It’s so easier to be kind to each other if we’re truly happy. But where to find this? It’s simple to talk but it’s hard to act. Maybe one of the mistakes is wanting to save the world, all at once. Help the neighbour with his aching leg. A foreign friend that has cancer, by sending her an e-mail with a sincere and joyful drawing that you made, specially for her.

Maybe a sneezy old lady, by giving her your tissue. If you can’t yet save the poor souls in war, give some love, respect and kindness for those who surround you.
That’ll do a lot. For you and them.”
